Mercedes E124 is, from the stylistic point of view, a development of Mercedes 190, which appeared two years before, with the E201 body. The design became much stronger and lost weight. Engines Mercedes E124 were constantly updated: they were diesel, then petrol and then again came back to diesel.

The standard set began to include dozens of additions: an air-bag on the driver's side, the ABS system, the central lock, electrically operated window raisers, headlight washers, the burglar alarm. With the release of the W124 model there occured a sharp increase of the price and the standard of luxury.

If before the number in the designation of a model there is letter "E", that means, that numbers of models have been displaced and rationalized. The model range began to consist of a sedan 320Е, a sedan and copuet, sedans 420Е and 500Е.
